Macron prioritizes calm in riot-hit New Caledonia – Naharnet

President Emmanuel Macron intervened in the crisis in riot-hit New Caledonia, urging for the removal of protesters’ barricades and promising extended police support. Despite the upcoming security operation for the Paris Olympics, Macron emphasized that the security forces will remain in New Caledonia for as long as necessary to restore order.

In a show of personal involvement, Macron met with both pro-independence Kanak leaders and loyalist leaders in Nouméa to address the violence that has resulted in six deaths and widespread destruction on the archipelago. He urged local leaders to cooperate in dismantling the barricades to facilitate peace.

Despite the unrest and no-go zones in parts of Nouméa, Macron assured that police reinforcements would stay to ensure safety. He also vowed to discuss strategies for economic recovery and political stability in New Caledonia.

The violence erupted during debates in the French legislature over changes to voter lists in New Caledonia, sparking fears of political bias. Macron’s past efforts to promote dialogue between factions in New Caledonia have been crucial in easing tensions, culminating in a 2018 referendum where New Caledonia opted to remain part of France.
