The new pro-European coalition government led by Donald Tusk in Poland is determined to hold accountable those accused of wrongdoing under the previous Law and Justice administration. This includes criminal charges against former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki for his involvement in attempting to organize a postal vote for the 2020 presidential election on grounds of public safety.
The decision to press charges against Morawiecki signifies a significant escalation in the government’s efforts to root out corruption. The parliamentary commission’s investigation revealed that the failed postal vote plan cost the state millions of zlotys, prompting suspicions of criminal activity. Lawmaker Jacek Karnowski affirmed that there is strong evidence to suggest that a crime was committed in this case.
Despite the controversy surrounding the election, ultimately held in June with Andrzej Duda winning a second term, the government remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice.
