Extortion and intimidation at construction projects in KwaZulu-Natal by the so-called construction mafia are reported to have significantly declined as police claim they’ve tightened their grip on the syndicates. Unscrupulous syndicates have previously forced several projects to be put on hold in the province, leading to serious delays in project completions and the withdrawal of many construction companies and contractors.
In 2023, Public Works Minister Sihle Zikalala revealed that 132 extortion and 550 extortion-related cases were being investigated by the Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
