Indian Spice Exporters Under Investigation for Cancer-Causing Pesticides in Products
Recent tests have shown elevated levels of cancer-causing pesticides in Indian spice exports, leading to investigations and concern among global food regulators. The Spice Board of India is inspecting processing plants of popular brands such as MDH and Everest after Hong Kong, Singapore, and other countries found high levels of ethylene oxide in their products.
The industry denies the claims, stating that their products are safe for consumption. However, the use of ethylene oxide as a pesticide is considered carcinogenic and beyond permissible limits. This growing scrutiny poses a threat to India’s $4bn spice export industry, with overseas orders being impacted and cancelled due to safety concerns.
While the industry claims to be taking corrective actions, the global concern over Indian spices raises questions about food safety and export standards.
