India’s election commission has issued a mild rebuke to PM Narendra Modi and the Congress party for divisive speeches during the ongoing general election campaign. The commission urged Modi and Rahul Gandhi to maintain decorum in their campaigns. Modi’s speech in Rajasthan, invoking religious sentiments, drew ire for promoting animosity and false claims about wealth distribution. Despite the reprimand, the commission chose not to suspend Modi or Gandhi from campaigning.
India is in the midst of the world’s largest election, with nearly a billion voters deciding Modi’s fate. BJP’s claim of 400 seats has faced skepticism, but a majority win is still anticipated. Election results are expected on June 4th.
