Hong Kong innovation chief in EU to boost ties, cooperation

Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Sun Dong, recently met with top EU officials in Belgium and France to strengthen ties in innovation and technology. This marked the first meeting between a principal official of Hong Kong and EU leadership in years, emphasizing the importance both sides place on bilateral relations.

Sun highlighted Hong Kong’s focus on economic development, improving livelihoods, and creating a better business environment for foreign investors due to its stable social environment. Discussions with European Commissioner Iliana Ivanova centered on enhancing innovation and technology cooperation, aligning with Hong Kong’s goal to become an international innovation hub.

Furthermore, Sun updated the Chinese Mission to the EU on Hong Kong’s progress in innovation and technology, and explored collaborations with EuropaBio director Claire Skentelbery. Plans to provide subsidies for life and health technology research institutes were also discussed to attract talent and research teams.

Despite recent criticisms from the EU regarding Hong Kong’s national security law, both sides aim to deepen cooperation in the tech sector. Sun will continue his visit to Paris for VivaTech 2024, highlighting the city’s commitment to driving innovation on a global scale.
