A series of violent attacks on prominent figures in Georgia has raised concerns about the country’s democratic values. It all started with a threatening phone call to Gia Japaridze, a university professor, which escalated into physical assault. The attacks were linked to their opposition to a controversial bill resembling Russian laws aimed at silencing dissent.
In addition to physical violence, there were numerous arrests during protests against the bill. NGOs condemned the excessive use of force and persecution of demonstrators. Lawyer Lacha Tkecheladze noted the government’s crackdown on its own people, prompting him to create a group of volunteer lawyers to defend protesters.
‘We’re becoming like Russia’
Despite the challenges, Japaridze remains resolute, emphasizing the importance of standing up for democracy. The situation in Georgia reflects a disturbing trend of authoritarianism creeping into the country. The need for international intervention to uphold human rights and protect freedom of speech in Georgia is more critical than ever.
