Marilyn Mosby, former top Baltimore prosecutor, to be sentenced for financial crimes
Former Baltimore state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby is facing sentencing this week for lying about her personal finances to access retirement funds during the pandemic. Two separate juries convicted Mosby of perjury and mortgage fraud charges related to her financial dealings.
Mosby gained national attention for charging officers in the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. During the pandemic, she withdrew $90,000 from Baltimore city’s deferred compensation plan to purchase vacation homes in Florida. Prosecutors allege she falsely claimed financial harm due to the pandemic to access the funds.
Facing a recommended 20-month prison sentence, Mosby’s attorneys argue against jail time, citing no victim, financial loss, or public funds involved in the offenses. Mosby has applied for a presidential pardon, with support from the Congressional Black Caucus.
Despite her legal troubles, Mosby’s attorneys seek to avoid prison time for her. The trials were moved from Baltimore to Greenbelt for a fair proceeding due to negative media coverage in Baltimore.
