Chad’s newly elected President Mahamat Idriss Deby succeeded his late father after being sworn in on Thursday following three years as interim leader under military rule. Deby took power after rebels killed his father, former President Idriss Deby, in 2021, who had ruled Chad since the early 1990s. Despite being one of the poorest countries in Africa, Chad held elections, making it the first of six junta-led states in the region to do so.
Deby’s victory in the election was controversial, with claims of fraud by losing candidates. His promises include dedicating 70 percent of the government’s budget to social welfare to combat the high poverty rate in Chad. The country is also facing challenges from an influx of war refugees from Sudan.
Former prime minister and runner-up Succes Masra, who resigned post-results, had called for a boycott of the election. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by various African leaders, indicating support for Deby’s new leadership in Chad.
