China’s food security faces land, soil and water challenges.

China, the world’s largest agriculture importer, is aiming to reduce its dependence on foreign food sources over the next decade to enhance food security. However, experts believe that achieving these targets will be extremely challenging.

Due to limited land and water resources, China will need to significantly boost agricultural productivity through technologies like genetically modified crops. This will also require expanding the cultivation area to meet the country’s ambitious goals set for the next 10 years.

The Chinese government aims to achieve 92% self-sufficiency in staple grains and beans by 2033, up from 84% in the previous period of 2021-23. This aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision of China becoming a leading “agriculture power” by the middle of the century. Meeting these targets will be crucial for China’s food security and reducing its reliance on foreign imports.
