Sputnik International
China’s Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has initiated joint military exercises around Taiwan, known as Joint Sword 2024A. These drills involve multiple military branches and will span from May 23 to 24. The exercises aim to address separatist actions from Taiwan and deter external interference, emphasizing joint combat readiness.
Following the recent election of a pro-independence leader in Taiwan, tensions have escalated between Beijing and the island. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office reaffirmed its stance against Taiwan’s independence, promoting peaceful reunification under the “one country, two systems” policy.
Additionally, the US and the Philippines’ joint military drills near the South China Sea have drawn criticism from Beijing for escalating regional tensions. The exercises highlight the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region, especially regarding Taiwan, China’s territorial claims, and US involvement.
China’s actions underscore its commitment to safeguarding territorial integrity while navigating international relations amid growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
