Concerns are rising around the Baltic Sea as reports suggest Russia may revise the borders of its territorial waters in the region. Lithuanian Foreign Minister describes it as an “obvious escalation” that demands a firm response. The draft proposal, if implemented, would update the coordinates used to measure Russia’s territorial waters in the Baltic Sea, claiming the current coordinates are outdated.
Leaders in the region, such as Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, emphasize the importance of adhering to international conventions. Despite speculation about Russia’s intentions, a Russian military diplomatic source denies any plans to revise the borders or territorial waters width.
Amidst tensions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insists that the Defense Ministry’s proposal is not political. The Baltic Sea’s strategic importance, especially with Russia’s presence in Kaliningrad, adds to the geopolitical complexity in the region. Lithuania has raised concerns about Russian intentions, while Finland and Sweden have strengthened ties with NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
With Russia’s actions closely monitored, the Baltic Sea remains a focal point for security challenges in Eastern Europe.
