The CEO of WestJet Airlines is calling for a full federal government review of how airports and aviation infrastructure in Canada are funded. Alexis von Hoensbroech believes Canada’s “user pay” model for aviation infrastructure needs reevaluation due to concerns about air travel affordability.
Canada’s major airports operate on federally owned lands by private, not-for-profit organizations. These airports pay rent to the federal government based on a proportion of their revenues, which drive up the cost of flying in Canada. Von Hoensbroech suggests that eliminating airport rents could make travel more affordable.
