Enhancing Safety and Accessibility: Spain Approves €3.55 Million Contract for Improving Ceuta-Morocco Border Road
Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has given the green light to a €3.55 million contract aimed at enhancing safety and pedestrian accessibility on the road leading to the Ceuta-Morocco border crossing. The current road section has been identified as requiring improvements, especially due to the high volume of traffic, exceeding 13,200 vehicles per day, mostly from through traffic.
During the summer, traffic surges due to Operation Marhaba, a border crossing operation between Spain and Morocco, leading to congestion and gridlock. To address these issues, the project will widen the road to include two lanes towards the border and one lane in the opposite direction, each 3 meters wide. Additionally, sidewalks ranging from 1.5 to 2 meters wide will be created on both sides of the road, along with street furniture installation.
The initiative aims to promote better mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, and other emerging forms of transportation, while also encouraging reduced space for automobiles and lower speeds. The project includes constructing ramps, steps for building access, and rehabilitating the road surface to enhance overall road safety and accessibility.
