Despite Kim Jong Un’s orders, the unauthorized demolition of South Korean facilities at Mount Kumgang has stalled, with little progress in the past five years. The destruction followed the breakdown of U.S.-North Korea talks in 2019, with the aim to rebuild facilities in North Korean style.
A recent satellite examination revealed the complete removal of South Korean structures, leaving only ruins. Kuryong Village, Onjonggak Rest House, and Ananti Golf Resort have vanished, with only the 12-story Asan Family Reunion Center surviving, as the fire department was torn down.
The demolition of villas, fueling stations, and the golf resort signifies North Korea’s ambitions to revamp the area for Chinese tourists. However, the lack of progress, economic hardships, and border closures post-COVID-19 pose challenges for the reconstruction.
With only the Family Reunion Center remaining, the future development of Mount Kumgang remains uncertain. External investment and resources are crucial for North Korea to overcome obstacles and revitalize the tourism zone.
