Kerala Governor Returns Ordinances for Ward Boundary Delimitation
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has returned ordinances approved by the state Cabinet, which aimed to delimit ward boundaries and increase their numbers in local bodies. The Governor cited the enforcement of the election model code of conduct as the reason for returning the ordinances.
Official sources revealed that the Governor sent the ordinances back to the state Chief Secretary on Tuesday. The ordinances, cleared by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s cabinet, proposed amendments to the Kerala Panchayati Raj Act, 1994, and the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994 in preparation for the upcoming local body elections in 2025.
The amendments were designed to adjust ward boundaries and numbers according to the population distribution based on the 2011 census. However, the Governor clarified that the ordinances could not be approved without the consent of the Election Commission due to the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls.
