Welcome to the Solomon Islands: Wiping Out Scabies with Ivermectin

In June 2022, the Solomon Islands government partnered with the World Scabies Program to launch a groundbreaking initiative to provide the entire population with the antiparasitic drug ivermectin. With over 700,000 people spread across hundreds of islands and atolls, the country is now in the midst of the second round of mass treatment.

Scabies, a highly contagious skin condition, is endemic in the Pacific region, particularly due to poverty, overcrowded living conditions, and poor hygiene. The nationwide mass drug administration (MDA) in the Solomons aims to control the spread of this disease by targeting the mites responsible for causing scabies.

Using ivermectin, healthcare workers are working tirelessly to ensure every individual receives the necessary treatment to eliminate the mites and their eggs. While ivermectin gained notoriety during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is proving to be an effective solution for eradicating parasites in the Solomon Islands.
