Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the commencement of drills simulating the launch of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, following an order by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The exercises involve missile units in Russia’s Southern Military District, including occupied Ukrainian territories. The drills include the use of Iskander and Kinzhal ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. Despite Putin’s nuclear threats against Ukraine and the West, no nuclear deployments have occurred, and Russia continues its aggressive military campaign.
The drills are a response to provocative statements from Western officials, as per Russia’s Defense Ministry. Belarus will also participate in the exercises. Moscow’s doctrine for using tactical nuclear weapons ranges from defending Russian territory to specific triggers. At the same time, the U.S. has condemned Moscow’s rhetoric but observed no change in Russia’s strategic posture.
Earlier reports revealed the U.S.’s preparation for a potential Russian nuclear strike in Ukraine in 2022, marking it as the first nuclear attack in a war since World War II.
