New Zealand and Australia come to the rescue of stranded tourists in crisis-hit New Caledonia
Stranded tourists in New Caledonia are finally getting some relief as New Zealand’s foreign minister, Winston Peters, announced the departure of a government plane to pick up 50 passengers with pressing needs. The first of many proposed flights to bring New Zealanders and Australians home from the Pacific archipelago, where unrest has caused chaos for over a week.
With more than 3,000 people trapped in resorts and hotels running out of food supplies, the situation has become dire. Reports of gunfire, arson, and looting near tourist establishments have left visitors fearing for their safety.
The closure of Tontouta International Airport to regular flights has made the situation even more challenging. However, both New Zealand and Australia are stepping up to help their nationals, with Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, announcing two assisted-departure flights for Australians and other tourists stranded in New Caledonia.
