As the scorching summer heatwave grips Delhi with temperatures soaring to 47.4 degrees Celsius, Indian authorities have taken the decision to close schools early for the summer holiday. The city officials issued an order for immediate closure, cutting short the term by a few days due to the blistering heat.
India’s weather bureau has issued warnings of severe heatwave conditions this week, with Delhi reaching the peak temperature. Other states like Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan have also followed suit in ordering school closures.
Scientific research has attributed the increasing intensity and frequency of heatwaves to climate change. The Indian Meteorological Department has cautioned about the health impact, especially on vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases.
While the heat takes its toll on northern India, southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been experiencing heavy rainfall. Amidst all this, India’s election commission is monitoring the situation to ensure voter safety during the ongoing election.
