ICC seeks arrest warrants for Israel PM Netanyahu, Hamas leaders

The ICC Prosecutor, Karim Khan, has requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for their alleged involvement in the Gaza war. At the same time, Khan also sought arrest warrants for leaders of Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, for their role in causing human suffering during the conflict.

This move by the ICC could potentially lead to political unrest as it involves high-profile figures. Notably, this is the second time during Khan’s tenure that an ICC prosecutor has pursued arrest warrants against sitting heads of government. The decision now rests with the ICC judges to approve the request.

Previously, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin, but those were never implemented. Similarly, warrants on former Sudanese leader Omar al Bashir were also not carried out. The situation involving Israeli leaders is likely to be divisive, especially with the involvement of the US in the international arena.

The conflict in Gaza has garnered attention globally, sparking protests and political debates, especially in the US. The repercussions of these arrest warrants could have lasting effects on both Israeli and Palestinian relations.
