Azerbaijan prohibits use of harmful substances

Azerbaijan has taken a significant step towards safeguarding public health and the environment by banning the use and circulation of 238 highly toxic substances. Goshgar Tahmazli, chairman of the Food Security Agency of Azerbaijan, announced this decision during the “Towards a Green World” Plant Health Forum.

The country established a Coordination Commission, following a Presidential Order, to ensure the safe operation of potentially hazardous facilities. This commission approved an Action Plan to eliminate existing problems in contaminated areas with unusable and prohibited pesticides and agrochemicals.

As part of this initiative, working groups conducted assessments at multiple sites across the country, identifying significant amounts of unusable substances and contaminated soil. This ongoing work aligns with President Azerbaijan’s decree declaring 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year.”

The Plant Health Forum aims to foster collaboration in protecting plants from pests, promoting plant health, and enhancing global food security. Participants include national plant health institutions, government agencies, and experts, creating a platform for sustainable practices in agriculture.
