Uruguay Expands Scientific Research Capabilities with New Hydrographic Vessel
Uruguay has acquired a state-of-the-art scientific hydrographic vessel from Global Seas LLC in the US for US$3.5 million. The decision was made due to the outdated nature of the country’s current navy vessels for scientific research.
The Mt Mitchell vessel, originally built in 1969 and refurbished in 2001, boasts modern electronics, engines, and safety features. With the capability to survey the ocean floor up to 11,000 meters deep, it is perfect for oceanography research, geophysics studies, and underwater cable inspections.
The Uruguayan Navy sent a team to Seattle for final inspections before sailing the vessel to Montevideo. With plans to use it for logistic operations in Antarctica, the Mt Mitchell is set to be flagged by the Uruguayan navy by June or July.
