The end of the Black Lives Matter era: Lessons on diversity’s limits | Nesrine Malik

If 2020 was the year that Black Lives Matter went mainstream, 2024 was the year it died. The diversity trappings adopted post-protests in 2020 are now being discarded quietly. The movement towards racial equality, once fashionable and global, has lost its momentum amidst a culture war backlash.

The focus shifted from reforming policing to representation in institutions and corporations. However, this approach merely added diversity without addressing systemic issues. The movement faced setbacks as DEI positions were eliminated and diversity efforts were scaled back due to legal challenges.

Despite the challenges, there is a growing realization that diversity alone is not enough in politics. The narrative has shifted to emphasizing meritocracy over inclusive policies, leaving many marginalized communities behind.

However, there is still hope in targeted efforts towards racial justice. Initiatives like BLM UK’s fund distribution highlight a more sustainable approach to addressing systemic inequalities. While the mainstream embrace of Black Lives Matter may have faded, the movement continues in a more focused and impactful manner.
