Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares demands a public apology from Argentinian President Javier Milei for derogatory comments made about the Spanish prime minister’s wife, sparking a diplomatic feud.
Spain has recalled its ambassador from Buenos Aires after Milei’s comments in Madrid, where he referred to a “corrupt woman” without explicitly naming Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez. This led to a demand for an apology from Albares, escalating tensions between the far-right Milei and the Spanish government.
Milei’s remarks come amidst existing diplomatic strain between Argentina and Spain, with previous disputes over drug use and economic policies. Albares warned of potential diplomatic ties rupture without a public apology, highlighting the severe state of relations.
European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, criticized the insult against family members of political leaders, echoing calls for decorum. However, Milei’s spokesperson defended the leader’s stance, refusing to apologize and demanding retractions of insults from Spanish officials.
Milei’s controversial visit to Spain included promoting his book with the far-right Vox party, rejecting meetings with King Felipe VI and Sanchez. Nonetheless, the public clash between the left-leaning Sanchez and far-right Milei exemplifies their ideological discord.
