South Korea Bans Access to North Korean Propaganda Video Idolizing Kim Jong Un
South Korea has banned access to a North Korean propaganda music video that idolizes and glorifies leader Kim Jong Un as a “friendly father” and “great leader.” The National Security Act restricts exposure to the North’s propaganda efforts, as the two Koreas are still technically at war.
The decision to ban the video was made after intelligence authorities reviewed whether it breached the law. Seoul’s Korea Communications Standards Commission stated that the video is typical content used for psychological warfare against South Korea.
The video, titled “Friendly Father,” has gone viral on social media platforms like TikTok. It features North Koreans ranging from soldiers to school children singing praises for Kim Jong Un.
The Kim family dynasty in North Korea has a history of building cults of personality to consolidate power. The country is currently working on a project to build 50,000 new homes in the capital by 2025.
The South’s regulator had previously blocked access to North Korean propaganda YouTube channels at the spy agency’s request. This latest move is in line with efforts to counter North Korea’s propaganda activities.
