France has launched a “major operation” in New Caledonia to reclaim a key road amid unrest sparked by controversial election reform. More than 600 gendarmes were dispatched to clear roadblocks put up by protesters, with over 200 arrests made.
Riots erupted on May 13, claiming six lives as Kanak activists protest against reforms that could weaken indigenous power. The French high commissioner promised to restore order “whatever the cost,” warning rioters of consequences if they do not back down.
New Caledonia, colonized in the 19th century, has a population of 270,000, with Kanaks making up 40%. Despite being under French control, the territory gained autonomy in 1998 through restricted voting rights. Other French territories urged the government to scrap reforms amidst escalating violence.
Previously rejecting independence in referendums from 2018-2021, New Caledonia’s unrest reflects deeper tensions. With the highway still closed, France faces a critical juncture in its handling of post-colonial territories.
