Energy minister of Pakistan affirms commitment to solar net metering policy

The government’s commitment to the solar net-metering policy was reaffirmed by Federal Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, dismissing rumors of its discontinuation. Net metering allows consumers to sell surplus solar energy to the power distribution company, cutting electricity costs.

Contrary to reports, the minister emphasized that the government supports the transition to solar power, initiated by former PM Nawaz Sharif and continued by PM Shahbaz Sharif. He assured existing net-metering consumers of no impact from any policy changes.

Mr Leghari highlighted the increasing demand for net metering, with a 125% rise in applications. Only 0.3% of electricity consumers currently have rooftop solar net-metering connections, totaling 113,000 nationwide.

In addressing power sector challenges, he mentioned an 8% drop in electricity demand due to reduced industrial growth. Efforts to prevent system overloading and tackle power theft issues were also discussed, with a call for responsible provincial actions.
