DRC army halts US-involved coup attempt

In a recent event in the Democratic Republic of Congo, opposition figure Jean-Pierre Malanga attempted a coup, which he had previously tried in 2017. One of the arrested American citizens was identified as Malanga’s son. A Facebook page believed to be owned by Malanga live-streamed the attack, expressing frustration with the current leadership.

US Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn expressed concern over reports of American involvement and pledged to cooperate with Congolese authorities in investigating the matter. The US embassy issued a security alert regarding ongoing activities by security forces in the region.

The United Nations mission in the DRC condemned the incident, offering support to local authorities. President Tshisekedi, in power since December, has yet to form a government, while Kamerhe’s bid for the speaker of parliament was postponed.

Despite the turmoil, the situation in the DRC remains precarious, with political tensions running high and uncertainty over the country’s leadership.
