In Kirants village of Armenia’s Tavush Province, there is a significant presence of police forces due to ongoing tensions in the area. Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the Tavush for the Homeland movement and Primate of the Diocese of Tavush, has arrived with his supporters to show solidarity.
The road from Sarigugh village to Kirants is currently closed, allowing only Kirants residents to enter the village. The National Security Service of Armenia has announced preparations to take over border protection in Kirants, amid concerns about border delimitation with Azerbaijan.
The Prime Minister’s Office previously mentioned plans for border guards from both countries to establish themselves on the agreed border, but further negotiations are needed in the sensitive area of Kirants. The local residents, unhappy about potential division and loss of property to Azerbaijan, have protested and engaged in civil disobedience.
The Tavush for the Homeland movement opposes unilateral concessions to Azerbaijan and is actively demonstrating in Yerevan against the current Armenian government’s policies.
