The recent results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Karnataka have left many shocked, questioning the quality of teaching and learning in the state. The pass percentage of the exams was a mere 54%, prompting the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board to introduce grace marks to boost the pass percentage to 73.7%. However, this decision received backlash from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who announced the scrapping of grace marks from next year.
Many attributed the poor results to a new system introduced this year to prevent malpractice, which involved web streaming the exams and live monitoring. Despite this, critics pointed out that the low pass rate exposed the inadequacies in the education system, with a lack of teachers, infrastructure, and quality education being major concerns.
Stakeholders criticized the practice of awarding grace marks as an excuse for administrative failures, calling it unjust and damaging to the integrity of the exam system. Calls were made to implement RTE amendments to improve accountability and quality of education at all levels.
