Tánaiste Micheál Martin has expressed the Irish Government’s strong commitment to seeking justice for the death of UN peacekeeper Private Seán Rooney in Lebanon. Visiting Beirut to meet Irish troops serving with UNIFIL, Mr Martin highlighted the importance of holding those responsible for Private Rooney’s death to account.
The Tánaiste also announced the deployment of an additional platoon of troops to serve with the Irish Battalion in UNIFIL. This decision reflects Ireland’s continued support for UNIFIL’s role in de-escalating tensions in the region, particularly amidst the war in Gaza.
During his visit, Mr Martin will meet with Lebanese ministers and address Defense Forces personnel at Camp Shamrock. The dedication of Irish peacekeepers and their families to global peace and security is lauded, with South Lebanon serving as a prime example of Ireland’s commitment to maintaining peace.
Accompanied by top defense officials, Mr Martin’s visit underscores Ireland’s unwavering support for UN peacekeeping efforts and determination to seek justice for fallen peacekeepers like Private Seán Rooney.
