In a tragic turn of events, 23 people attempting to cross the Mediterranean from Tunisia to Europe have been missing for two weeks, as reported by the country’s National Guard on May 18. The group left Nabeul in early May, prompting their relatives to contact authorities only 10 days later. The National Guard has arrested five individuals involved in organizing the journey, including two relatives of the missing.
In a separate incident, four bodies were recovered after the National Guard intercepted two crossing attempts and rescued 52 migrants near Sfax. Concurrently, a boat carrying around 50 migrants, including individuals from Benin, capsized off Tunisian shores. This tragedy underscores the dangers migrants face in attempting perilous sea journeys to Europe.
Increasing Interceptions
Tunisia has seen a surge in migrant interceptions, with over 21,000 individuals prevented from leaving or rescued in the first four months of 2024. This sharp increase is part of efforts to stem irregular migration, driven by agreements with the European Union and Italy.
