The recent allegations against a trade office manager in the city’s UK outpost by British authorities have sparked a diplomatic row between China and the UK. Regina Ip, Executive Council convenor, acknowledged the need for trade offices to gather intelligence, stating that similar collection efforts should not be against the law.
Former finance chief Henry Tang Ying-yen emphasized the important role trade offices play in outreach and communication. The trio charged has been released on bail, with the case adjourned until next Friday. Ip expects British prosecutors to present solid evidence and believes Hong Kong and central authorities will vigorously defend their interests.
