Residents line up to buy groceries at a supermarket along a street blocked by debris and burnt items following nighttime unrest in the Magenta district of Nouméa, New Caledonia, May 18, 2024.

The New Caledonian government has urged for the lifting of roadblocks in and around the capital of Nouméa due to recent unrest, leading to six fatalities, including two gendarmes and three Indigenous Kanak. Calls for calm have been made, with ongoing clashes and tensions in various districts.

‘Serious clashes’

The situation has been further complicated by the involvement of the radical CCAT cell, aligned with pro-independence groups, which has called for restraint. However, there are reports of armed militias engaging in manhunts against rioters, escalating the crisis.

Despite the chaos, the South Province is working towards maintaining order and providing verified information to residents. Loyalist leaders emphasize the need for calm and unity to overcome the current challenges.
