Georgians Celebrate “Family Purity Day” Amid Controversy

The atmosphere in Tbilisi, Georgia, shifted as chants replaced protests against the “foreign influence” bill. On May 17, families, elderly, and priests gathered for the event created to uphold “traditional” values in the country. This celebration, initiated by the Orthodox Church, coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.

Government leaders, including Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, attended the event to show strength amid protests against the bill, criticized for suppressing civil society and independent media. The demonstration reflected a clash of values and political agendas.
