Hong Kong’s transport minister recently announced a HK$2 increase in taxi flag-fall rates to help compensate for a drop in earnings among drivers during the pandemic. Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung emphasized the importance of meeting industry expectations and addressing concerns with Uber.
The government’s main solution involves setting up a premium taxi fleet to improve the industry’s reputation. Additionally, a proposal to regulate ride-hailing platforms is in progress and will be revealed later this year.
The Executive Council approved the rate increase for urban taxis, effective from July 14. This adjustment extends to green and blue cabs as well.
Minister Lam highlighted the need for the industry to improve services to regain public trust and mentioned ongoing efforts to encourage operators to enhance performance within a structured framework.
Proposed regulations seek to ensure the use of authorised vehicles for ride-hailing services, with a focus on improving overall taxi industry standards.
