Australians stuck in the troubled Pacific Island territory of New Caledonia are facing food shortages and rationing as they wait for a way out after deadly riots that claimed four lives. Joanne Elias, a traveller from Sydney, reported that food supplies are running low at the resort in the capital Noumea where her family is stranded.
Indigenous Kanak people’s anger over electoral reform sparked the riots, resulting in burnt businesses, looted shops, and road barricades. French police reinforcements have been deployed to restore order in the French-ruled territory. The unrest, which has claimed four lives, could impact President Macron’s plans to strengthen French influence in the region.
Elias and her family are among 30 Australians stranded at a resort, with dwindling food stocks and concerns about water shortages. The New Caledonia government reassured that there are food reserves for two months, but distribution remains a challenge.
Efforts are underway to clear road barricades and supply essential items to the public. As the situation unfolds, stranded Australians are hoping for a swift resolution to the crisis.
