Eight EU member states are calling for a re-evaluation of the situation in Syria to allow for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. Countries including Austria, Italy, and Poland believe that the evolving situation in Syria warrants a reassessment in order to find more effective solutions for handling the influx of refugees trying to reach EU countries.
At a recent summit meeting in Cyprus, the officials highlighted the need for increased support for Lebanon to prevent further flows of asylum seekers and migrants to the EU. They emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of migrant smuggling and human trafficking, calling for decisions on border crossings to be made by governments, not criminal networks.
While the EU continues to support Syrian refugees in line with international law, the focus is now shifting towards practical and realistic solutions that can be implemented. Talks are underway with Syrian authorities to facilitate voluntary returns, with potential for forced returns in the future. Meanwhile, Lebanon has witnessed a recent return of over 300 Syrian refugees, urging the international community to assist in resettlement or repatriation efforts.
