Gardaí are investigating an incident where security workers were assaulted and vehicles were damaged by fire at a site in Clonmel designated for modular homes for Ukrainian refugees. The altercation occurred late at night when security personnel were attacked by several individuals, resulting in one worker being hospitalized and vehicle damage. No arrests have been made yet, and investigations are ongoing.
The site, planned for 82 modular homes for Ukrainian refugees, is part of the government’s initiative to provide short-term accommodation for approximately 2,600 Ukrainians. Pre-built homes are expected to arrive later this year with potential occupancy by early next year. The Department of Integration and the OPW are overseeing the project, which has faced some opposition in the area.
The OPW, in collaboration with contractor Sisk Ltd and An Garda Síochána, is addressing security and public order concerns at the site. The HSE, the previous landowner, is cooperating with authorities in the investigation. Similar modular home developments for Ukrainian refugees have been established in other locations across Ireland, including Cavan, Cork, Sligo, and Mayo.
