The Arctic region is increasingly becoming a new frontier for geostrategic competition between the powers. Moscow and Beijing see eye-to-eye on the need to preserve the Arctic as a territory of peace, low military-political tension, and stability, as President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China underlined.
Russia and China are collaborating in the development of the Arctic Northern Sea Route, including energy and scientific cooperation. Beijing’s involvement in the project complements the Belt and Road Initiative, with cargo traffic via the route reaching record levels. The US has attempted to undermine the Arctic LNG-2 project, a joint effort by Russia and China, due to their status as direct competitors in the field.
Despite tensions, cooperation in the Arctic remains crucial for promoting environmental protection, sustainable development, and scientific research. How this strategic partnership unfolds will have significant implications for US national security and NATO’s stance in the region.
