Morocco has intensified its wildfire defense with an expanded fleet of Canadair aircraft and advanced technology, including artificial intelligence and drones, to combat the looming threat of forest fires in the upcoming summer of 2024.
The nation allocated a budget of MAD 153 million for forest fire prevention and control, focusing on early detection through enhanced surveillance patrols, maintenance of forest trails and firebreaks, creation of water points, and procurement of new intervention vehicles.
Despite a 70% decrease in wildfires in 2023, Morocco faces an elevated risk this season due to persistent drought and heatwaves. The National Agency for Water and Forests reported 466 wildfires last year, affecting over 6400 hectares of land, emphasizing the urgent need for preparedness.
