Kirants villagers reopen interstate road after meeting Tavush governor, local resident confirms

Residents of Kirants village in Armenia’s Tavush Province have reopened the Kirants section of the Armenia-Georgia interstate motorway after a meeting with Governor Hayk Ghalumyan. The checkpoint in the Sarigyugh village section has also been reopened, as reported by a Kirants resident to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Although the villagers plan to close the road again, for now it remains open. The governor informed them that they cannot stop the Armenia-Azerbaijan border delimitation work and suggested their consent for a new road construction.

The local residents had closed the Kirants sector of the motorway in protest of the border delimitation results revealed recently. Agents from the National Security Service visited to determine which houses may pass to Azerbaijan based on the maps.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that border guards from Armenia and Azerbaijan will be deployed in the area within eight to nine days. However, deployment in the sensitive part of Kirants will happen later due to ongoing adjustments.
