Kenyan lawyers have taken legal action to stop the planned deployment of police officers to Haiti to address the rising violence in the country. Despite Kenya’s offer to send help last July, the High Court ruled in January that officers could not be deployed without a proper arrangement with the Haitian government.
After Kenyan President William Ruto signed a security deal with Haiti in March, discussions resumed regarding the deployment. Other countries, such as Jamaica, the Bahamas, Barbados, Benin, Chad, and Bangladesh, have also pledged personnel for the mission, although there is hesitancy due to past international interventions causing negative impacts on Haiti.
Recent developments include the arrival of civilian contractors to build living quarters for the Kenyan-led force. Despite initial setbacks, the mission seems likely to proceed following the swearing-in of a transition council in Haiti.
