Creating Smart Villages and Green Technologies: IFC’s Strategy for Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan and IFC Collaborate on Smart Villages Strategy with Green Tech

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is collaborating with the government of Azerbaijan to develop a strategy for building smart villages using green technologies. Aliya Azimova from IFC shared this initiative at the “Enhancing Ambition, Enabling Action: COP29 Sustainable Business Forum” event in Baku.

IFC, under the World Bank structure, has aided in creating a Roadmap for Offshore Wind Energy in Azerbaijan, predicting the capacity for offshore wind farms to reach up to 7.2 GW by 2040. The focus on wind and solar power plants will lead the way to decarbonization in Azerbaijan.

Azimova highlighted IFC’s efforts in addressing greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors and emphasized the importance of ‘green’ buildings. The organization is also working on projects for ‘green’ building certificates globally, with plans to host a seminar on the topic in Baku.

As Azerbaijan gears up to host COP29 in November, the country is expected to welcome around 70–80,000 foreign guests. The event will be a pivotal moment in addressing climate change and encouraging global cooperation.
