Argentine Government Introduces Bill to Congress for Easier Gun Ownership and Disposal
The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, has submitted a bill to Congress to facilitate legal gun ownership while encouraging holders to dispose of their weapons. With approximately 800,000 unregistered firearms users nationwide, the Security Ministry aims to streamline processes for gun registration and promote the voluntary surrender of firearms.
This initiative fulfills one of Milei’s campaign promises and reflects the government’s commitment to promoting safe and legitimate access to gun possession. The bill also includes a one-year grace period for unauthorized gun owners to regularize their status by either transferring their firearms to licensed individuals or participating in the voluntary surrender program.
The National Program for the Voluntary Surrender of Firearms (Pevaf) will be extended for four years, providing economic incentives for those who surrender their weapons. The program, which aims to prevent illegal circulation of firearms, will ensure that surrendered guns are rendered unusable to prevent re-entry into the illegal market.
