The Taoiseach has proposed using the Thornton Hall site in north Dublin for large-scale tented accommodation for those seeking international protection. With over 160 acres of space, the site could provide a temporary solution to the shortage of State accommodation. Simon Harris emphasized the need for specific proposals to be brought forward by the Department of Integration, which could take up to four weeks to prepare. Tents would be pitched in a part of the Thornton Hall site that is already “serviced” with necessary facilities. There is a growing consensus to utilize this site, which was purchased by the State in 2004 for almost €30m.
Recent developments include the pitching of over 90 tents along the Grand Canal in Dublin this morning, highlighting the urgency for suitable accommodation. The Government is also considering utilizing 600 free beds for asylum seekers. Tánaiste Micheál Martin expressed support for large-scale tented accommodation at Thornton Hall, emphasizing the need to exhaust all possible opportunities. As the number of people seeking asylum in Ireland continues to rise, Mr. Harris emphasized the importance of a more sustainable system to address the current challenges.
