Slovakia PM Robert Fico in critical condition after shooting

Deputy PM Kalinak says Fico is stable post-surgery after being shot five times in an attempted assassination.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in stable condition after surviving an assassination attempt in Handlova, where he was shot five times. The attack, which shocked the nation and garnered global condemnation, left Fico in critical condition despite successful emergency surgery.

Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak provided an update on Fico’s condition, stating that while stable, his injuries are severe. The 59-year-old leader faced a politically motivated attack by a 71-year-old writer, who has been taken into custody.

Environment Minister Tomas Taraba reported that the operation went well, with one bullet passing through Fico’s stomach and another hitting a joint. The seriousness of the attack prompted a state security council meeting and expressions of support from European leaders.

Fico, known for his controversial policies, including a shift in Ukraine relations and media reform, continues to receive treatment amid ongoing investigations into the attempted assassination.
