Police officers are currently in Kirants village in Armenia’s Tavush Province, working to reopen the Armenia-Georgia interstate road that has been closed by local residents for about four hours. The residents are protesting against the Armenia-Azerbaijan border delimitation results that were recently revealed. The tension escalated when the National Security Service agents arrived to determine which houses will pass to Azerbaijan according to the maps.
Tavush Province police chief advised the villagers to meet with the governor and address their concerns instead of shutting down the road. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that border guards from Armenia and Azerbaijan will be deployed in the area within the next eight to nine days, but there are still some unresolved details causing issues in Kirants. The situation remains tense as both parties are struggling to agree on the border location.
The police have issued a warning to the Kirants villagers to reopen the road or face legal consequences. It remains to be seen how the situation will be resolved in the coming days.
