The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, has initiated a constitutional review process in search of a more suitable constitution for the nation. Tshisekedi expressed concerns about the current Congolese law, stating it was established as a “post-conflict” law in 2006 and no longer serves the country effectively. Despite facing criticism and speculation from the opposition and civil society, Tshisekedi remains firm on his decision to establish a commission for a new constitution.
However, there are fears that Tshisekedi may use this opportunity to reset his term limit and seek additional mandates. The opposition has strongly opposed this move, accusing him of attempting to secure a third term in office. The debate on constitutional amendments and extension of presidential terms is not unique to the DRC, with several other African countries engaging in similar discussions.
